Siemens turbines to supply power in Tanzania

Siemens Energy has received an order from Jacobsen Elektro for the supply of three industrial gas turbines to Tanzania. The turbines are for the power plant Jacobsen Elektro is building for state-owned energy provider Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). The three SGT-800 gas turbines with a combined capacity of 100 MW, will be delivered to the Ubungo power plant in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Connection to the grid is planned for late 2011. The natural gas for the power plant is supplied via pipeline from the Songo Songo gas field off the coast of Tanzania. Of the 40 million people in Tanzania, less than 10% of the population has access to the national power grid. The country is mostly dependent upon hydro power, with only a few gas-fired power stations available. The Siemens SGT-800 is an efficient industrial gas turbine; all emission requirements are below international standards, providing environmentally friendly fossil-fueled power generation to Dar Es Salaam.
