Siemens to provide solutions for offshore drilling

The shipyards Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd., CMHI/Shenzhen as well as Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard in China have awarded Siemens Energy a total of three orders for electrical power supply packages for offshore drilling rigs. These packages, which include BlueDrive Drilling, are destined for semi-submersible and jack-up rigs for international players such as COSL Drilling Europe, Prospector Offshore Drilling, and Falcon Energy.

As per the contract, Siemens will deliver power supply packages for installation at a total of 5 drilling rigs. The packages will be composed of medium- and low-voltage switchgear, transformers, medium-voltage thruster drives, motors and BlueDrive drilling drives as well as commissioning and project management. For the first time, Siemens is delivering electrical solutions for drilling rigs to the Chinese shipyards CMHI/Shenzhen and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard.

“Siemens has already delivered similar solutions for twelve jack-up and ten semi-submersible drilling rigs in China,” said Adil Toubia, CEO of Siemens Energy’s Oil & Gas Division. “These follow-up orders underscore our customers’ satisfaction with project execution to date. This simultaneously strengthens our position as the leading market supplier of electrical solutions for offshore platforms in China.”

For the project at the Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd. shipyard, Siemens is for the first time supplying its electrical solution for “closed ring DP3 operation”, which enables higher availability of the rig as well as reduced fuel consumption. Siemens is the first supplier to have this solution approved by DNV.
