Sidenor expands melt-shop

Sidenor SA in Basauri, Spain, has placed an order with consortium leader SMS Demag, Germany, for the expansion of the existing electric melt-shop for steel to include the production of stainless steel. The scope of supply includes an oxygen lance for the existing VD facility (Vacuum Degassing). Furthermore, SMS Demag supplies new copper moulds, an emergency torch cutter as well as an exhaust system for the torch cutter. This cutter which is located at the machine exit is prepared for cutting with gas and powder. Sidenor operates a 130-t AC electric arc furnace, two ladle furnaces, a VD facility and a continuous caster for billets. The annual production of structural steel, high-grade structural steel and tool steel amounts to approx. 600,000 t. The production of the first rust-free melt is scheduled for the beginning of 2006.
