Sandvik awarded R120m stacker

In the Northern Cape of India, Sandvik Materials Handling (SMH) has landed a recession-breaking order worth R120-million as part of the Assmang’s greenfield Khumani iron-ore mine expansion project. According to Alf Pain, SMH’s Region Africa’s product line manager, Sandvik has been awarded the contract to design, supply and erect two additional machines – a stacker and a reclaimer – which will be used to process run-of-mine (Rom) material from the new section of the mine. Assmang announced recently that it would expand output at its Khumani mine by six-million tons a year. Four million tons is intended for export and the balance for the domestic market. The new machines will be commissioned towards the end of 2011 and Sandvik is currently investigating the possibility of having them fabricated locally. This latest project will be executed from SMH’s Bed-fordview office, with technical design expertise coming from Sandvik’s principal office in Leoben, Austria.
