Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is planning to set up a 250 acres product specific special economic zone (SEZ) at unutilized land at its existing stainless steel facility in Salem and is likely to apply for clearance of its SEZ proposal once the central government lifts the present freeze on fresh applications. According to Mr SK Roongta, chairman of SAIL, the comapny is looking at developing a stainless steel based SEZ at spare land near its Salem Steel Plant. SAIL will invite investments from several downstream stainless steel-based industries in its proposed SEZ. Special steel producers and other vendors may also be permitted to set their shop in the zone. Dedicated port facilities for the SEZ may also be considered.
