ContourGlobal has entered into an agreement with the government of Rwanda to construct and operate an integrated gas-extraction unit and a 100MW power-generation facility at Lake Kivu on the Rwanda-Congo border. The project signifies the first full-scale methane-extraction venture in Rwanda and has an estimated cost of USD 325 million. ContourGlobal Kivuwatt Ltd (CGKL), the wholly owned local subsidiary of ContourGlobal, will execute the project. Wartsila Corp. (Helsinki, Finland) will provide gas-combustion engines for the power plant, while Antares Offshore LLC (Houston, Texas) will serve as the advisor for natural gas extraction. The low-cost energy produced at the power plant will provide electricity to households in Rwanda and its neighbors Burundi and Congo. The power plant complex will be developed in two phases. A power generating capacity of 25MW will be commissioned by 2010, and the remaining 75MW will be developed by 2012. The first phase will consist of three gas engine power generator units while the second phase will have nine additional generator units.
