Pretoria mill fire

A fire occurred at Iscor’s Pretoria plant, in which the substation responsible for internal electricity distribution for the western area of the plant was damaged. The main electrical power supply to the plant was not affected. The functions of the damaged substation will be taken over by another substation, which will be upgraded in due course. The company said the damaged substation will not be rebuilt, as the plant has sufficient power supply to operate at normal capacity. A full investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the incident. There were no injuries or casualties, and the incident will have no financial impact as the damages are covered by insurance agreements. The Pretoria plant ceased steel production activities in 1997.
