On 8 December 2008, Outokumpu Oyj Foundation awarded grants for the year 2009 to the amount of EUR 222,900. The company aims at promoting academic research and university education in metal production and processing, metal and mining technology, ore geology and corresponding business activity. Mr Jari Savolainen of Oulu University received an award of EUR 2000 on his master’s thesis titled “The Research of Slag Emulsification with Physical Miniature Model”. Additionally, two master’s theses were granted special rewards. Mr Lauri Aspola of Helsinki University of Technology received an award of EUR 1500 on his thesis “Sustainability Indicators in Copper Smelting Processes”. Mr Timo Juuti of Oulu University also received an award of EUR 1500 on his thesis “Static Strain Ageing in FCC Structured Austenitic Stainless Steels.” For Professor Grants, Simo Pekka Hannula, Helsinki University of Technology received EUR 10,000. Professor Jouko Härkki, University of Oulu received EUR 25,000. Professor Seppo Kivivuori of Helsinki University of Technology received EUR 28,000. Professor Kyösti Kontturi, Helsinki University of Technology received EUR 20,000. Professor Veli Kujanpää, Lappeenranta University of Technology receive EUR 10,000 and Professor Pekka Taskinen of Helsinki University of Technology received EUR 35,000. Also Mr Erno Airiskallio of University of Turku received EUR 15,000 for his thesis “The Research Concerning Corrosion Resistant Surfaces of Steels”. Mr Balázs Omelka, Helsinki University of Technology received EUR 15,500 for the thesis “A Measurement Method for Bubble Particle Behavior in Controlled Turbulent Mixing and Generating Turbulence Particle Size Hydrophobicity Relationships”.
