Calvalley Petroleum Inc. (Calgary, Canada) has announced initial results of the Al Roidhat-1 exploration well located on Block 9 in the Republic of Yemen. The third of the four well exploration program (Al Roidhat-1) was drilled and cased to a total depth of 1159m and intersected oil-bearing Qishn sands at a depth of 1025m. Qishn formations are the primary target in central and eastern Yemen. Three Qishn sand layers were encountered bearing oil. The first layer contained 11 meters of net oil column, second layer contained 20 meters of net oil column and the third layer contained 6 meters of net oil column. The Qishn sand is highly porous and permeable reservoir. Similar Qishn formations in Sayun-Masila Basin produce at rates ranging from 5000 to 15,000 barrels of oil per day from a single well. Based on seismic interpretation, the Al-Roidhat field extends over an area covering approximately 8 sq. km. The company has retained the service of Schlumberger to carry out testing.
