Nucor has placed an order with Siemens Energy & Automation Inc. to equip its Crawfordsville, Indiana, steelworks with three turn-key static var compensator (SVC) systems. The three new Siemens SVCs will replace two existing SVCs at the plant. One of the compensation systems will be used for supplying power to the arc furnaces or, if needed, to the adjoining rolling mill, which will be a first for any steelworks. Power output of the SVCs will be the largest of its kind in the US Commissioning is planned to take place between autumn 2002 and spring 2003. The project includes removal and disposal of the old equipment as well as engineering, erection and commissioning of the new compensation equipment. Siemens will also analyse and provide additional improvements to the mill’s power supply system. Installation will take place during scheduled maintenance periods so that no additional production outages will be required.
