New polyethylene plant for Thailand

Thailand ‘s National Petrochemical PCL has signed a contract worth USD 67.9 million with Samsung Engineering Co. of South Korea and Samsung Engineering (Thailand) Ltd for the building of a new polyethylene plant. The new plant will have a production capacity of 250,000 tons per year. The total value of the new project amounts to USD 130 million. The new plant is expected to begin operations in 2004. National Petrochemical was established as a joint venture between PTT PCL, which holds 38%, and its downstream customers, including Siam Cement PCL, with a 24.97% stake. It currently produces 437,000 tons of ethylene and around 170,000 tons of propylene annually.
