New cobalt refinery in Ontario

Canmine Resources Corporation is currently commissioning a new cobalt refinery located in Cobalt, Ontario. Full operation is expected in May of 2002 and the plant will produce about 300 tons of cobalt powder a year utilizing a hydrometallurgical process. Feedstock will come from the company’s Werner Lake Cobalt mine. Canmine has spent approximately $10 million in the last few years at its mine and refinery to bring this project to fruition. AMEC (Timmons, Ontario) provided engineering services for the project. Future plans include expansion up to 2,000 tons a year and automation of material handling systems.
