Netherlands: gas storage planned

Dutch utility Essent is planning to turn three depleted gas fields at Waalwijk in the south of the Netherlands into a 600-800 million cubic metres gas storage facility. Essent has bought 20% of the equity from the producers and expects either to buy more equity or to pay the other owners rent for the use of the space. If all goes to plan, work could start on the
conversion process next year, but it would not say at what cost. The gas stored will be high-calorie, whereas the gas now being injected into storage at its plant at a converted salt cavern at Epe in Germany is low-calorie. The first cavern is now filled and the other three, which will bring the total to about 250 million cu m, will be filled by early next year, the company said.
