Memorial project

AK Steel is donating 20,000 pounds of stainless steel produced in western Pennsylvania to a project raising money for a permanent memorial to the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93. The flight crashed last year in Somerset County, Pa., during the September 11 terrorist attacks. The stainless steel, melted at AK Steel’s Butler Works, will be used by the Hearts of Steel project to make commemorative bracelets. The bracelets are inscribed with “We Remember 9-11-01 / United We Stand,” with “USA” on one side and the famous call to action “Let’s Roll” on the other. All proceeds from the sale of the bracelets will go to help construct a memorial to passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93.
