Major fire at ThyssenKrupp Nirosta

Krefeld. A major fire broke out at the Krefeld plant of ThyssenKrupp Nirosta GmbH in the early hours of today. The area affected was the cold rolling mill. The fire generated large quantities of smoke. Because of this several employees were sent home as a precaution.

Around 100 fire fighters from the local fire service and the plant fire department were involved in putting out the fire. Pollution levels were continuously monitored. Nearby residents were requested to keep doors and windows shut. The cause of the fire has not yet been established. The fire caused considerable damage which cannot yet be quantified.

“Fortunately no-one was injured and the fire service reacted to the situation very quickly,” said Dr. Jörg Beindorf, Chief Executive Officer of ThyssenKrupp Nirosta: “However, the fire will have a significant impact on our production in the time ahead.”

ThyssenKrupp Nirosta employs a total of 4,200 people, including 2,200 at the Krefeld site.
