Magnetostrictive sensors exhibit strong resilience

MTS Sensors, a division of MTS Systems Corporation, has increased the scope of its GB-Series of highly accurate, programmable magnetostriction-based linear position sensors for addressing further applications. These latest additions of the GB-Series (referred to as the GB-N) have the sensor rod (along with fitting flange) and the housing for the supporting electronics have an extremely robust 1.4404 Stainless Steel (AISI 316L) construction.

MTS Sensors’ GB-Series devices utilize the company’s proprietary Temposonics® magnetostrictive technology. Supporting stroke lengths from 25mm to 3.25m, they deliver up to 1μm resolution, ±0.005% (full scale) repeatability and ±0.02% (full scale) linearity. Their operational temperature range spans from -40 °C to +90 °C (+194 °F). They have IP67-rated protection against water/ dust ingress when supplied with an M12 or M16 connector. Alternatively IP68-rated protection is provided for cable outlet versions.

“There is a broadening spectrum of applications areas where exposure to corrosive substances can prove very problematic, potentially shortening the working lifespans of sensors situated there,” states André Beste, Technical Marketing Manager at MTS Sensor Technologie. “Thanks to the properties of 1.4404 Stainless Steel, our new GB-N models can accurately determine position while ensuring superior longevity compared to conventional sensor solutions on the market.”
