Libya door to open?

US oil companies could be one step closer to restarting their long-mothballed operations in Libya after the energy-rich nation reportedly reached an agreement with Washington and London on Tuesday to accept responsibility for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. The deal could pave the way for a lifting of sanctions that forced firms ConocoPhillips, Marathon Oil, Amerada Hess Corp. and Occidental Petroleum Corp. away from their operations in the North African country 17 years ago. After initially saying a deal was likely to be announced “at any moment,” the source said it may be withheld until relatives of the victims had been informed. A senior US official said reports of a deal were premature.
