Large-scale water recycling project launched in Shanghai

A collaborative agreement on the utilization of reclaimed water was inked between China State Shipbuilding Corporation, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd, and Shanghai Chengtou Group Corp, which is the eastern cosmopolitan’s first large-scale water recycling project in industrial enterprises, according to the Shanghai-based shipbuilder.

Under the agreement, the two parties will jointly promote the large-scale application of recycled water in the shipbuilding industry to further enhance green development in the shipbuilding sector.

By introducing purified recycled water from the nearby sewage treatment plant in Shanghai Chengtou, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding will replace its ship ballast water, plant water, and equipment commissioning cooling water with reclaimed water.

The project, which will start construction in September this year, will be put into operation before the end of October. The launch of the project is hoped to save 600,000 to 700,000 tons of tap water on an annual basis.

Being Shanghai’s first industrial enterprise to introduce and use reclaimed water systems on a large scale, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding is offering a feasible solution for innovative water conservation in the shipping industry and setting a benchmark for water saving among shipbuilding enterprises.
