Kirkuk oil output to rise

Iraqi crude oil production from its northern Kirkuk fields should rise by more than 50% to 770,000 barrels per day (bpd) by year’s end, a top US army official in the region has said. “By December, we should be able to get production up to about 770,000 bpd from 500,000 bpd now,” said Colonel Robert Nicholson, head of engineers for the Fourth Infantry Division, which controls three provinces north of Baghdad. “We are working on four or five projects to improve production, such as repairs to two gas-oil separation plants,” he told reporters. “What we are trying to do is get it back to pre-war levels by December.” Pre-war production capacity at Iraq’s northern fields was estimated at 800,000-900,000 barrels per day out of the country’s 2.8 million bpd capacity. Repairs to Iraq’s northern export pipeline to Turkey, damaged by fire, should be complete in about a week, Nicholson said.
