The German engineering firm Elbe Maschinenbau has been awarded a contract by Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity to build three power plants serving the Baghdad area of Iraq. The terms of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract were not disclosed but the deal is the largest power deal to have been awarded since the June handover of power to the interim administration. Elbe Maschinenbau is to build a 550MW station and a 110MW plant, both heavy fuel-operated. The contract includes an option for a 240MW unit that would be either heavy fuel-operated or gas-fired. An official announcement from the ministry is expected by the end of August, with work on the plant set to begin this autumn with completion by the end of 2005.
