Sitting down with Steven Sutiono, the co-founder and President of INASSDA, it is clear that he is passionate about the stainless industry and is on a mission to raise its profile in Indonesia.
“The metals industry has the potential to make a major contribution to Indonesia’s national economic development,” explains Steven. “It has long been my dream to involve our company, Sutindo Group, in contributing more to developing the stainless industry in Indonesia. There is so much potential here! Given the level of investments that have been made in local nickel mining and stainless production in recent years, we should have a more competitive industry. Yet in reality, the industry is not fully developed and could be more strongly supported by the government.”
The metal industry sector has a major role to play in the development of national industry in Indonesia, explains Steven. “Metal products, and especially stainless steel, are needed by important industrial sectors, including construction which includes buildings and property, roads and bridges, electricity, machinery, oil&gas, marine and also chemical sectors.”
Encouraging government support
The INASSDA aims to unite the main stakeholders to influence the government and policy-making to benefit all industries involved in producing and using stainless steel. The export potential of the nickel-based metal industry, which reached USD 7.08 billion in 2019, has encouraged the government to strengthen its performance. Downstream policy is believed to be able to make a significant contribution to the economy. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the export value of nickel-based metal industry products in 2019 increased 47.5% compared to 2018.
“Enhanced government support will allow our industry to grow faster in a responsible manner,” explains Steven.
Official Supporter
INASSDA officially supports Stainless Steel World Asia Conference & Expo, which took place on 11 & 12 September 2024 in Singapore. Located in a strategic area at booth F13 with an area of 36 square meters, INASSDA was be present in the form of a pavilion, where Stinox Metal Indonesia coil center and other members also participated. Founding members
INASSDA is staffed by five dedicated individuals. Steven Sutiono is the Founder & President, and Yogi Dwi Putranto is the Founder & Secretary General. Jefta Everhard Robert is Accounting/Treasurer; Bhirawa H Aji fulfils the role of Commissioner; and Juerg Schweizer from the Nickel Institute is a Consultant to the Board.
Technical support
Key activities at INASSDA are educating companies in the stainless industry, providing networking for members and stakeholders, and cooperating with reputable organisations such as Nickel Institute and IMOA who have excellent resources available.
“This is the ideal time to grow our association, and we must seize the opportunities that exist.” INASSDA is keen to play a pivotal role in helping Indonesian industries find expert technical information. “We need good technical expertise to provide a strong foundation to support our industries to grow,” he explains. “From stainless manufacturers to the oil and gas and mining industries, to all kinds of projects that utilise stainless steels – all can benefit from access to expertise. It is tremendously useful to share practical experience as well.”
Connecting key players
Steven plans for INASSDA to act as a bridge connecting local stakeholders with contacts outside the country. “For example, I hope that foreign companies will soon be able to approach us to meet the main players in every industry segment, or to find fabricators, suppliers, and so on. We can be a link from within Indonesia.” “Through collaboration, we can utilise INASSDA as a hub to connect local and foreign companies, key institutions or organisations, non-profit organisations and government bodies.”

Member benefits
One of the key benefits for INASSDA members is access to materials knowledge and research. “Our members enjoy the excellent support INASSDA receives from organisations such as the Nickel Institute and the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA). They have important resources we can utilise, such as webinars and seminars, as well as practical expertise and experience.”
“In the future, we expect to be a bridge between companies looking for materials or services and local businesses who can provide those. The INASSDA will also facilitate networking between members, who can meet one another and collaborate.” The INASSDA team is looking to ASSDA as a benchmark for their development.
“ASSDA is well-established and is a great example of how an industry association can benefit its members. For example, their Fabricator of the Year Awards celebrate the use of stainless steel, which is a great way to raise the profile of the association and its members.”
Indonesia’s stainless industry
“There is great potential in Indonesia’s stainless steel business,” emphasises Steven. “Since production started in 2016, the volume produced has risen from 24,400 tonnes to over 6 million tonnes in 2023. That’s a remarkable increase in just eight years! The time is right to grow our downstream industries. There is an excellent opportunity for fabricators of items like kitchens and home appliances, which are traditionally imported from China. It’s time for our members to start competing and even exporting as well.”
Indonesia exports around 80% of its production because local consumption is only 800,000 tonnes per year. “Clearly, there is a lot of scope to increase the amount of stainless being used locally.”
