Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, a renowned shipbuilding facility in South Korea, has marked a significant milestone with the commencement of steel cutting for a new 45,000 cubic meter (cbm) medium gas carrier (MGC). This development was announced by Purus on its social media platforms, highlighting the ship’s design focused on low-carbon energy transport, specifically ammonia.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by Purus to address the increasing global demand for sustainable energy solutions. The company has commissioned two such dual-fuel ammonia-ready MGCs from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, signifying a robust push towards enhancing its logistical capabilities in ammonia transport.
Scheduled to join the fleet in 2026, this vessel represents the next phase of expansion for Purus, which aims to operate one of the world’s largest ammonia transport fleets. The fleet expansion includes the addition of three 40,000 cbm MGCs currently in service and four more 45,000 cbm MGCs expected to be delivered between 2025 and 2026.
Purus has already demonstrated its operational prowess with a successful ship-to-ship ammonia transfer, underscoring its commitment to leading-edge solutions in the sector. The new ships will feature state-of-the-art cargo handling systems that enhance operational flexibility and efficiency. These systems are designed to expedite loading and unloading processes, thereby reducing turnaround times at ports and delivering cost savings to customers.
