Siemag, a subsidiary of SMS group, has received an order from Outokumpu Stainless Oy for the delivery of a grinding machine designed for grinding slabs at temperatures of up to 800C. The new machine is an essential component in the modernization of an existing production plant for high grade special steels and will go into operation in 2010. To be ground are special steels of the grades AISI 2xx, 3xx, 3xxTi and 4xx. The maximum slab weight will be 31tn at a temperature of up to 800C. The grinding system will be arranged immediately downstream of a continuous casting plant. The slabs will be brought to the grinding machine via a roller conveyor and, after grinding, will be returned onto the roller conveyor which will then transport them to the hot rolling mill. The grinding machine will be fitted with a grinding gear which enables the use of grinding wheels with an OD of 915mm and a width of 150mm. Grinding angle can be varied steplessly between 90 and 45C.
