The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has announced the discovery of gas/condensate.
The discovery was made after a well was drilled about 50 kilometers northwest of the Snøhvit field.
A 38-metre gas/condensate column was encountered in the Knurr formation, and in the Stø formation, a 54-metre gas/condensate column was encountered. The original targets of the exploration for the wells were to find petroleum.
The preliminary estimation of the size of the discovery is between five and seven million standard cubic meters (Sm3) of recoverable oil equivalents.
The well was not formation tested, but extensive data acquisition and sampling has been carried out.
The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 2371 meters below the sea surface and water depth of 348 meters. The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned. The well was drilled by the Scarabeo 8 drilling facility.
