EU sets target date for Mittal’s bid ruling

EU regulators have set a 19 May target for an antitrust ruling on Mittal Steel’s EUR 19 billion hostile takeover bid for Arcelor SA. The proposed takeover was posted for the first time 10 April 2006 on the list of mergers submitted for approval by EU antitrust authorities. Under EU rules, the European Commission must decide after an initial month long investigation whether to approve the deal or subject it to a deeper probe that can last up to four months.
