EDF approves EPR pilot unit

Foratom (Brussels, Belgium) has announced that Electricité de France (EDF) has given the go-ahead for the construction of a demonstration EPR unit at Flamanville (Manche), thus confirming France’s continuing commitment to retaining the nuclear energy option. The last new reactor to start commercial operation in France was the Civaux-2 unit in April 2002. The Finnish utility, TVO, has already ordered an EPR, a design developed by
Framatome of France and Siemens of Germany.
