CSPA approves Northern Gateway recommendation

The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) welcomed the Joint Review Panel’s recommendation that the Government of Canada approve the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Project, subject to the 209 required conditions. The Joint Review Panel was asked to examine and report on the feasibility of the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline by the National Energy Board in 2010. The project represents a significant opportunity for Canadian steel producers, and related industries, to create jobs and strengthen the economy.

The twin pipeline, which would be used to transport oil across more than 1,100km from Northern Alberta through Northern British Columbia to port in Kitimat, BC, holds the potential to generate significant direct and indirect benefits that promise to boost the prospects of Canada’s steel industry.

“This pipeline represents a much-needed energy infrastructure project which would strengthen Canada’s export potential, and create significant new opportunity for Canadian steel products”, said CSPA president Ron Watkins.

Canadian steel manufacturer Tenaris, which makes steel pipes for oil and gas drilling and has a supply chain that reaches across the country, reinforced the CSPA’s support for the project.
