Computer learning package

The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) has prepared Stainless SteelCAL, a computer-aided learning package sponsored by the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF). This interactive learning tool provides a highly visual learning experience, linking basic knowledge of the material to images and case studies from the Architects’ Guide to Stainless Steel. The module is based around a grid, which allows the student to learn about material, style, fabrication, detailing, environment and market place across a range of building applications, envelope, structure, street, fittings, art and fit-out. For example, selecting style with envelope enables the student to learn about the process and availability of coloured stainless steel, and to view examples of building where coloured stainless has been used, including the Frank Gehry designed Experience Music Project and Euro Disney, France. Selecting fabrication with street furniture provides the student with information on the different ways to weld stainless steel, which can be viewed in short video sequences. Although designed with students of architecture in mind, Stainless SteelCAL will find a ready audience with practising architects interested in extending their knowledge of stainless steel as part of their continuing professional development (CPD). Further information about Stainless SteelCAL and a copy of the CD Rom may be obtained by accessing the ISSF web site. A summary of resources available to architects and structural engineers can be found here.
