SMS Demag South Africa (Pty) Ltd has handed over a chain-type magnetic separator to Columbus Stainless (Pty) Ltd one month ahead of the contractually assured deadline. The new plant is located at Middelburg, Mupumalanga Province, South Africa. The processing of hot rolled coils in the cold rolling mill without prior pickling had caused the filter system of the four-high mill stand to become overloaded to an extremely high degree. The magnetic separator now ensures the precipitation of the very high iron content of the emulsion before it flows into the existing filter system. This reduces the amount of maintenance required for the existing filter and improves the surface quality of the product and the strip cleanliness.
