Chad has joined the ranks of oil-exporting nations under a project expected to double the revenues of one of the world’s poorest countries. The USD 3.7 billion project is led by ExxonMobil and backed by the World Bank. Leaders of Niger, Republic of Congo, Sudan and Central African Republic attended the launch ceremony Friday at ExxonMobil’s Kome base, which has grown up on three oilfields among the sorghum and millet fields in southern Chad in less than three years. The project began with pipeline construction in 2000 and shipped its first tanker-full of oil last week.
