The Board of Directors of Ecopetrol have given the green light to Phase 3 of the Modernization Project of the Barrancabermeja Refinery (PMRB) worth a total investment of USD 3.386 billion. Operations will officially begin on the construction phase of the project, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2016. This project will allow the refinery to increase the conversion factor from 76% to 95%, resulting in the ability to obtain more products, including gasoline and diesel.

Outokumpu will deliver stainless steel to Börger GmbH. The duplex will be used to build tanks required in biogas production. This order marks Outokumpu's first order for the newly launched duplex steel grade LDX 2404®. The steel will be produced at the Outokumpu in Avesta, Sweden. LDX 2404® is the ideal choice for the tanks due to the high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical properties of the steel.
Allegheny Technologies Inc. has completed its acquisition of Ladish Co. Inc., a USD 883 million cash and common stock purchase. The Milwaukee-based company is now an operating unit of ATI’s High Performance Metals division, which includes superalloy and titanium metal producer ATI Allvac and refractory/reactive metals producer ATI Wah Chang.
Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. (Sumitomo Metals) has introduced summertime working hours at its head offices in Tokyo and Osaka beginning 1 June 2011, as a method to limit electricity consumption. From 1 June 2011 until 30 September 2011, the business day will start and end one hour earlier. In Osaka, this means that employees will work from 8:00-16:30 as opposed to 9:00-17:30.

Avesta Welding has launched new formulations of the basic variants of standard electrodes Avesta 308L/MVR, 316L/SKR, 347/MVNb, 2205 and 309L, improving their properties and making them more welder friendly. When compared to previous formulations, the advantages include improved mechanical properties, particularly impact strength at low temperatures; improved slag removal and minimum residual slag on the finished weld; improved joint geometry and less welding spatter.
