Canam-Heavy wins ENR global best projects award

Canam-Heavy, a division of Canam Steel Corporation, won an Award of Merit in the Airports/Ports category for the 2015 Global Best Projects Competition presented by Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine.

The South Terminal redevelopment at Denver International Airport caught the judges’ attention due to its two monumental canopies that featured architecturally exposed steel. The canopies, among other steel components, were an immense challenge to design, fabricate and erect. Moreover, the customers had strict requirements with regards to the steel grade, welder training, surface preparation and primer.

The judging panel evaluated the competing projects based on various criteria, including safety performance, innovation, contribution to the community as well as the excellence of the design and construction. Special emphasis was placed on the project teams’ ability to overcome the challenges of working with team members based in several countries. In 2013, Mortenson Construction also presented a Star Award for Innovation to the project team of Canam Heavy, LPR Construction and Miro engineers for identifying a new solution to an old problem and using emerging methods and new technologies.

The awards will be officially presented to the winners at the ENR Global Construction Summit to be held in New York City on 10 September 2015.
