Calpine Corporation has announced plans to acquire 19 steam turbine generators from Toshiba International Corporation. With this and prior turbine transactions, Calpine has ensured access to the major equipment necessary to attain the company’s goal of operating 70,000mw of electrical generation by the end of 2005. This latest order represents 3800mw of generation capacity. Calpine’s agreement with Toshiba provides for the first equipment deliveries to occur in December 2002. Another 15 steam turbines will be delivered in 2003, with the balance received by the end of 2005. This newest order of advanced steam turbine generators will be installed in Calpine’s high-efficiency, combined-cycle power generating facilities. With 30 new energy centres under construction, Calpine expects to bring more than 17,000mw of power to the market by the end of 2003. The company’s announced development program includes 17 new facilities that will generate approximately 14,600 megawatts of additional capacity.
