BASF is expanding the capacity of its MDI plant (diphenylmethane diiso-cyanate) in Antwerp, Belgium, from a current level of 230,000 metric tons per year to 320,000 metric tons per year from 2003 onwards. Primarily, the additional capacity is intended to supply the rapidly growing Asian market. MDI is an important intermediate in the production of polyurethanes (PUR). Polyurethanes are versatile polymers that find use in particular in the automotive and construction industries. The polymers are also used in the production of refrigerators, upholstery, mattresses and shoe soles.
