Baosteel to build heavy plate mill

Baoshan Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd. (Baosteel, Shanghai, China), has placed an order for the construction of a 5-meter heavy-plate mill with an international consortium under the leadership of SMS Demag AG. The project, valued at approximately EUR 180 million, will provide Baosteel with the largest and most modern mill of this type in China. The plant comprises a heavy plate rolling mill, as well as various finishing facilities and will have an annual capacity of 1.4 million tonnes in the first construction stage. It is scheduled to go on-line in April of 2005.
In the first construction stage, the heavy plate mill will produce plates with a maximum width of 4.9 metres and thicknesses ranging between 5 and 150 mm. In phase 2, the thickness will be increased to maximum 400 mm and the annual production capacity to 1.8 million tonnes.
SMS Demag AG will supply the engineering and the main mechanical-equipment components. SMS Demag AG’s scope of supply includes the automation packages for profile and flatness control with CVC Plus technology, accelerated-cooling equipment and two levelers.
SMS Demag’s consortium partners are Kawasaki Steel Corp., Japan, for the production technology and quality assurance; and Siemens AG for the electrical equipment and automation.
The plates are intended for gas and oil pipelines, the shipbuilding industry, for boiler and pressure vessels, for machine, steel-framed building and bridge construction, as well as for corrosion- and wear-resistant applications.
