AvestaPolarit Stainless Oy, Tornio, Finland, has placed an order for extension of their existing steckel mill with SMS Demag AG, Germany. After having doubled production capacity for stainless steel slabs, the existing steckel mill had become a bottleneck for further processing. Because of this, AvestaPolarit decided to extend its steckel mill with three additional mill stands located downstream on the exit side of the coiler furnace. The runout table will be extended, and a new fully hydraulic downcoiler with coil conveying system will be installed. After installation of the new equipment, planned for late summer 2004, the modernised plant will have a capacity of 1,700,000 tonnes per year.
