Avesta expands

AvestaPolarit Stainless Oy has awarded a consortium of ABB and Mitsubishi (Hitachi) a contract to supply electrification, drives and automation to its hot rolling mill expansion in Tornio, Finland. The Tornio hot rolling mill, built in 1986, was electrificated and automated by ABB. With the new investment of AvestaPolarit, the capacity of the Tornio hot rolling mill will increase from about 1 million tons to 1.7 million tons per year, after completion of the on-going major expansion programme at the Tornio integrated mill. The main components of the investment are three additional mill stands and a new down-coiler, which will be installed after the existing hot rolling mill. ABB’s DriveIT rolling mill drive train with medium and low voltage drives will run and control the stainless steel rolling mills and roller tables.
