Austria: pumped storage power plant

With the construction of the new pumped storage power plant, titled Limberg II, Verbund, Austria will more than double the output of its Kaprun power plant from 353MW to 833MW. Limberg II will cost EUR 365 million, and will further enhance the security of supply in Austria at peak consumption times from 2012. The first two machine units will be commissioned in 2011 and full operation will commence in March 2012. All the preparatory measures for the construction of the power plant will be carried out in the first construction phase. These measures include the construction of the required access tunnels. In the second construction phase when the caverns are completed, the construction vehicles will have to access the site at Limberg power plant through a system of tunnels that will extend over a distance of more than 5km.
