Antonio Marcegaglia, CEO of the Italy-based Marcegaglia group has been awarded Stainless Steel Executive of the Year 2010. A panel of experts in the sector together with Steel & Metals Market Research, prestigious consulting company specialized in the specialty steel sector and creator of the prize together with Metal Bulletin, gathered in Rome on 7 September within the 9th Stainless & Special Steel Summit, and awarded the important prize to the entrepreneur at the helm of the Marcegaglia group. The prize comes at the highest point of a growth path to success in the stainless steel sector. Born in Mantua on 12 December 1963, Antonio Marcegaglia graduated with honours in business studies at Milan’s Luigi Bocconi University in 1987 and joined the company full-time a few days later. Since then, he forged an indissoluble bond between his personal career and the growth of the fine mid-sized Italian company of those days, transforming it into today’s major global player. Marcegaglia established Marcegaglia Gulf in Doha, Qatar in 2007. The expansion of industrial activities continued in 2008 with its entry into China, where, in Yangzhou, 350 km North-West of Shanghai, Marcegaglia established its first Asian plant for the production of high-precision stainless and carbon steel tubes, and with the start of work on a new stainless steel production plant in Vladimir, Russia. In 2009 Marcegaglia celebrated its 50th anniversary since foundation with Steellife, an international contemporary art exhibition dedicated to steel, involving directly Antonio Marcegaglia through its “passionate” role as promoter of arts and culture.
