AK Ashland gains environmental registration

AK Steel has said that its Ashland, Kentucky Works has received a certificate of registration under ISO 14001 for its environmental management system. It is believed that AK Steel is the first US integrated steel producer to receive the registration. AK Steel initially set a goal of achieving registration for the Ashland Works by 31 December 31 2001. AK Steel said domestic auto-makers have set requirements that their suppliers implement environmental management systems that comply with the ISO 14001 international environmental management system. AK Steel has previously received ISO 9002 quality registration as well as QS 9000 quality certification, the domestic auto-makers’ quality management certification programme. AK Steel will now proceed with achieving ISO 14001 registration at its other plants, with a goal of completing the process by the end of 2002.
