ACERINOX with Danieli to revamp the SVAI caster

ACERINOX, one of the most competitive groups in the world in stainless steel manufacturing, has contracted Danieli Automation for the electrical and automation revamping of the Stainless Steel Slab Caster at Columbus Stainless (Pty) Ltd.

Based in Mpumalanga, South Africa, producing austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel and duplex stainless in plate, sheet, coil, and strip, Columbus Stainless (Pty) Ltd is a major stainless steel supplier in Africa and internationally.

The CCM, manufactured by SVAI in the nineties and with a maximum casting capacity of 72,000t/month, currently represents a bottleneck and needs to be modernized so that it can be a strong link between the steel plant and hot mill.

The order is for a turnkey project to upgrade the following: (i) PLC and SCADA systems; (ii) Changing the 18 motors/drives of the bow from DC to AC; and (iii) Complete replacement of the existing Process Control System (Level 2) with the Danieli Automation Q-CAST including the Q-ART, Q-CUT, Q-MIX and Q-COOL technological packages.
