A huge project underway in Taiwan will utilise over 53,000 titanium tiles on the roof of a temple. Once completed in 2026, it will be the largest titanium temple roof in the world.

The design titanium TranTixxii™, developed by Nippon Steel Corporation, has been selected for the roofing of the main hall of the True Enlightenment Temple in the Xuanzang Culture Religious Park, located in Zhunan Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan. With the cooperation of Taiwan Nippon Steel Trading Co., Ltd., this initiative marks a milestone in architectural applications of titanium.
The main hall, currently under construction, spans approximately 4,800 m² and will feature traditional-style roof tiles made entirely of titanium. Around 30 tons of titanium will be used, making it the world’s largest temple roof constructed with titanium, surpassing the 15 tons at Senso-ji Temple and 22 tons at Zojo-ji Temple in Japan. A total of approximately 53,000 titanium tiles will be installed.
Full project scope
The broader development of the True Enlightenment Temple and Xuanzang Culture Religious Park encompasses eleven buildings with a total floor area of 44,761 m². These structures are classified into four primary categories:
- Main hall for religious ceremonies (roofed with TranTixxii™)
- Restaurants and multifunctional activity areas
- Cultural facilities, including offices, lecture rooms, and an auditorium
- Accommodation, such as dormitories
The main hall, using TranTixxii™ titanium tiles, serves as the symbolic architectural centerpiece of the entire project.
Design and construction team

The roof of the main hall is designed by Noi design International Co., Ltd. (Taipei, Taiwan) under the construction management of Ruentex Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., a leading firm in the region.
The detailed design and construction are managed by:
- Chiwas Building Materials Co., Ltd. (New Taipei City, Taiwan), known for cultural property restoration
- Tas Metal Co., Ltd. (Kaohsiung City, Taiwan)
The tile moulding and processing are carried out by Master Prosperous Industrial Co., Ltd. (New Taipei City, Taiwan), renowned for its expertise in precision press working.
Architectural and cultural significance
The exterior of the main hall adopts a Tang Dynasty architectural style, honoring historical Chinese design traditions. Another major structure, the Xuanzang Cultural Center, draws inspiration from Nalanda Temple in India, which was a significant center of Buddhism during Xuanzang’s pilgrimage 1,300 years ago.
Material advantage: TranTixxii™ titanium

The titanium tiles use TranTixxii AD03, featuring a blast treatment finish that imparts a deep, enduring visual impression. Titanium, with a specific gravity of 4.51, is approximately
half the weight of copper (8.9) – a traditional roofing material – making it a lightweight yet durable alternative ideal for large-scale architectural applications. Roofing work is scheduled for summer 2025, with the entire temple project set to be completed in October 2026.
