Marcegaglia technology investment

Marcegaglia has invested in a new tool capable of continuously measuring the mechanical and microstructural properties of steel strips or sheets and online metal alloys. The tool overcomes the limitations of other instruments available today and can also be used for non-ferromagnetic materials such as aluminium alloys, austenitic stainless steels, copper alloys, brass and others.

The operating principle of the new tool is the binding between the mechanical properties of the material and the process parameters: the system directly submits the material to a combination of compression and traction forces and measures the resulting deformation through instruments such as encoders or laser velocimeters. The method also allows the evaluation of the percentage of recrystallization of a cold-deformed metal material after a high-temperature annealing process.

Marcegaglia processes over 5.6 million tons yearly and is the world’s first producer of stainless steel welded tubes; it also creates and develops a wide range of stainless steel flat products. Marcegaglia Specialties is the business unit dedicated to the stainless steel activities.
