Almarin renovates Spain’s oriental lighthouse

Almarin has carried out the design, supply and installation of three lantern rooms with its respective domes for Port of Barcelona. The first was to renovate the Cap de Creus lightroom together with two other for the lighthouses that mark the entrance to Barcelona’s port. Cap de Creus lighthouse marks an emblematic cape of the same name in Catalonia’s north eastern region in Spain.

In Barcelona, both structures were installed above new concrete towers designed by Port of Barcelona. The work at Cap de Creus lighthouse involved removing the old lantern room and assembling a new one. Manufactured from 316 Stainless Steel and with tempered glasses, the new lantern room replaces the previous one installed in 1960. This replacement was necessary due to the advanced state of corrosion of the metalwork that usually cracked the panes of glass allowing for water ingress. With the new design of the lantern room, the vertical structural elements facilitate the panes of glass replacement and maintenance. During the works in October, the lighthouse was working with the backup light, temporally reducing its range.
