ArcelorMittal to refurbish coke oven batteries

ArcelorMittal is to invest over EUR 100M in the refurbishment of the coke oven batteries in Gijón. The project to refurbish and recommission the existing facilities, with an execution time of two years, will ensure compliance with the environmental requirements defined in the current integrated environmental authorisation granted for this facility and will include the implementation of the BAT, defined in BREF that will come into force in 2016.

The main part of the approved investment will focus on the re-construction of two 45-oven batteries at ArcelorMittal Asturias’ coke plant in Gijón, installation of a state-of-the-art emission collection and scrubbing system, and implementation of efficient by-product management systems. The refurbishment work will start in mid-2016 and the coke oven batteries are expected to reach full capacity in 2019.

Once operational, the coke oven batteries will meet the coke requirements of the blast furnaces at the site.
