Nalcor selects ANDRITZ hydromechanical equipment

Nalcor Energy extended its January 2013 order with ANDRITZ HYDRO, part of international technology Group ANDRITZ, to include the delivery and installation of the hydromechanical equipment at the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric generating facility, Canada. Commissioning is scheduled for 2017.

The hydromechanical equipment includes 10.5m wide and 23m high roller gates, stop-logs and a 75m wide, 25m high tower for the mechanical drives for five spillway bays, as well as twelve trash racks, 6.5m wide, 20m high intake gates, mechanical drives and stop-logs for the powerhouse. The hydromechanical equipment has a total weight of 9,000 tons.

Earlier, ANDRITZ HYDRO was awarded an order in January 2013 to supply four Kaplan turbines and four synchronous generators each with a minimum output of 206MW for the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric generating facility on the lower Churchill River in Labrador. The turbines will be amongst the largest Kaplan turbines in the world. Power generated at Muskrat Falls will be used to replace energy production of an existing oil-fired thermal power station and will make a major contribution to reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by eliminating up to 4.5mt per year.
