Biofuel-fired CHP plant

Fortum Varme has been granted an environmental permit for a new biofuel-fired combined-heat and power plant to be built in Vartan, Stockholm in Sweden. The environmental permit also covers the installation of flue gas condensers in the existing units at the Vartan plant. According to the plan, the new combined-heat and power (CHP) plant will cover 25% of Stockholm’s heat demand and 10% of the city’s electricity demand. The new plant is reportedly going to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions by 800,000tpy, as it will be fired with biofuels. The project to implement flue gas condensing will be launched as soon as the environmental permit comes into effect. The value of the investment in flue gas condensing technology is approximately EUR 32 million.
