Ethiopia is to spend USD 1.4 billion building three new hydropower plants that will help meet the country’s plans to become a major exporter of electricity in the region. The three hydropower plants are expected to produce a total of 1155MW, which will be used to meet increased power demand domestically as well as in the neighbouring countries Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya. By 2010, the construction of the Tekeze hydropower dam with a capacity of 300MW, the Geligele Gibe II with a capacity of 420MW and the Belesse hydropower dam with a capacity of 435MW, will be completed.
