Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. has announced that a subsidiary company has received a contract to provide a range of services on a new hydroelectric power project in the Scottish highlands. The Glendoe scheme, to be built near Fort Augustus, Invernessshire, by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), will generate up to 100MW of electricity. Situated on the western edge of the Monadhliath Mountains, the scheme involves constructing a 35m high, 1000m long dam; constructing a network of tunnels totalling 18km in length; and building a power station in a cavern deep inside a hill on the shores of Loch Ness. Jacobs has been closely involved in the project since its early stages, having worked in partnership with SSE to perform a project feasibility review and scheme optimisation as well as handling the engineering aspects of the tender design and specification and assessment of the construction tenders. Jacobs’ responsibilities are now extended to cover design review, technical support, and site supervision during construction.
