UK: Jacobs to build refrigerant plant

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. has been selected by INEOS Fluor to provide project management, construction management, engineering, and procurement services for the expansion of KLEA 125 (HFC 125 refrigerant) production at INEOS Fluor’s Runcorn facility in England. INEOS Fluor is planning to increase production capacity to around 14,000 tons in response to demand for alternatives to hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerants. Officials did not disclose the contract value, but noted that the first phase of the expansion plan is due for completion in 2005. KLEA 125 has been manufactured on a smaller multi-product facility at INEOS Fluor’s Runcorn facility. Its use is vital as a component in many non-flammable, energy-efficient refrigerants, designed to replace CFCs and HCFCs that are being phased out under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Following this investment the unit will be dedicated to HFC 125 production.
